A belated greeting from the State Capitol building, and in my opinion, the most majestic building in Iowa! The first official week began with the swearing in of the 88th General Assembly on January 14th, which I’m so proud to be a part of, the historic inauguration of Iowa’s first female governor, Kim Reynolds, and the swearing-in of Sec. of State Paul Pate and Sec. of Agriculture Mike Naig. The House & Senate are now conducting committee and sub-committee meetings, of which I was selected to be on the Agriculture, Environmental Protection, International Relations, and I serve as Vice Chair of the Economic Development sub-committee. I look forward to these very much and please let me know if you have any questions or comments about any of these. This week, legislators are working on bills to be submitted, and appreciate the budget submitted by Governor Reynolds. The legislature is required by law to spend no more than 99% of the revenues taken in, and the Governor’s estimate came in under 98%. Education, health care, and expanding broadband to rural Iowa are some of the issues she is focusing on. If you would like to get in touch with me or would like to visit and/or tour YOUR State Capitol, please contact me at thomas.gerhold@legis.iowa.gov or via U.S. Mail at: 1007 East Grand Ave, Des Moines, IA, 50319, or call 515-281-3221. It is a tremendous honor to represent the great people of Benton County and the northern part of Iowa County, thank you and stay warm!
