Girls' Basketball Teams will put Benton County girls in the fight for First

Vinton-Shellsburg's Girls' Basketball team will battle for the top spot next Monday in Des Moines The girls' basketball teams in both Vinton-Shellsburg and Benton Community have been in a nail-biting competitions all season.  Vinton Shellsburg girls' team beat Grinnell at Grinnell by nine points in a final score of 52-43. Not being left out, Benton Community girls took West Liberty in a 53-44 on their own court in Van Horne.The Well Fargo Arena in Des Moines will be the next chance for the 3A class, to show their best games.

Vinton-Shellsburg HS grad Schulte on Central College men's soccer team

Kale Schulte, a Vinton-Shellsburg graduate, has been honored for his contributions to the Central College men’s soccer team in the fall of 2022. A freshman midfielder, Schulte received his first varsity letter. His 2022 Stats include 13 games played, 3 shots, 1 shot on goal. Complete stats can be seen HERE.Coach Garry Laidlaw awarded 25 varsity letters after his squad finished 3-11-2 overall and 2-5-1 in the American Rivers Conference.

Huge Day for the Stormin’ Vikings

Vinton Shellsburg's Stormin' Vikings Swim Team (Photos courtesy of Kelly Allsup) Saturday in Dubuque was a day of firsts for the Stormin' Vikings as they achieved a number of program "firsts" as they qualified in two individual events and two relays. Competing in a single-class sport against large schools that partner with other large schools, it can be a daunting task to finish in the top 32 individuals or the top 24 relays. But the team rose to the occasion turning in by far their best performance of the season.

Vinton Knights of Columbus free throw contest results

The Vinton Knights of Columbus Marian Council 3893 held their annual free throw contest on Sunday, February 5 at the Vinton Shellsburg middle school gym.  The contest is for all area girls and boys ages 9 to 14.   The winners were:10 year old Girls – Alexis Primrose12 year old Girls – Ava Schirm13 year old Girls – Ayden Nosbish

VS High School students aim high in the sport of Archery

Sara Rommann teaches 4th Grade at Tilford Elementary in the Vinton-Shellsburg School District for her "day job" and has also taken on teaching archery to high school students after school. It's been a long journey to get the program started Rommann said. She began her efforts to get the archery program started before COVID hit working with then-superintendent Mary Jo Hainstock.

Stormin Vikings Conference Meet

Ian Allsup celebrating one of his wins in the pool. He also broke both his brother Isaac's and the Conference Meet records! Neither the weather nor a computer malfunction could hold back the Stormin’ Vikings Saturday as the team headed to Coe College to compete in the North Central Swim Conference (NCSC) Meet, coming away with a second-place finish for the second year in a row. The 200 Medley Relay of Wes Farrell, Ian Vrba, Ian Allsup and James DeSmet announced its presence early with a comfortable, yet surprising win.
