Second Restaurant Closes in Vinton in 24 hours - The Old Hospital Pub

In less than 24 hours, a second announcement was made via a simple Facebook post, that the Old Hospital Pub announced has closed its doors. On Sunday a post went out that said, "We regret to announce today that the Pub is permanently closed. We've appreciated your support these last 2 years!The Pub will still be available to rent for private party space until further notice.

Chilango's Restaurant now closed

After five months of various struggles from the beginning, Chilangos Restaurant owner has decided to close the doors to the business. Michael Gonzales said that he wanted to thank the community for their support, and that he said that he has enjoyed his time here. He said that the community has been wonderful to work in and he has appreciated all of the support.

42° North Winery - Wine Tasting and Entertainment this Saturday September 30

Vinton-Shellsburg FFA came to assist with the grape picking from 42° North Winery's growing vineyard. On Tuesday, David and Mary Paustian along with their son Garrett, coordinated their days off to work together in bottling wine.  The wine that they are bottling will be there for you to enjoy...next year. The 160-gallon tank full of "Slinky" wine, a Moscato which Mary explained is the sweetest of all their wines, will fill about 800 bottles and take approximately six steady hours of work for the three to complete.

Friendly reminder for our Farmers

Every harvest season I hold my breath. Not because of the dust or the thousands of Asian beetles that make their way into the house, but in apprehension. This Saturday the extension office is holding a Farm Safety day at the fairgrounds and the always demonstrate how they rescue someone who gets stuck in a grain bin. In the picture, you can see what happens on the inside of a grain bin when emptying the bins.

Naig Announces Grant Opportunity for the Development of Livestock Vaccines

Vaccine development is one of many steps taken to enhance our foreign animal disease preparednessIowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig today announced the formation of the Livestock Protection Innovation Grant Program. The program will provide grant funding to assist Iowa-based companies in the development of safe and effective vaccines that may help protect Iowa livestock from foreign animal diseases.
