Many children seem enthralled by big vehicles -- fire trucks, dump trucks and other huge machines.
A new community event organized by the Vinton Parks and Recreation Department will give children of all ages a chance to get close to such vehicles.
"Touch A Truck" will take place from 12 to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 14, in the Vinton-Shellsburg High School parking lot.
The event is the idea of Assistant VPRD Director Matt Boggess. It will include the Vinton Fire Department aerial ladder truck, city and county vehicles, trucks from Coots Materials, a medical helicopter and more.
Admission is just $1 and all proceeds will go toward the Vinton-Shellsburg Operation Backpack, which sends lunches home with needy children.
The Vinton-Shellsburg FFA will hold a carnival there at the same time. There will be a variety of activities and a petting zoo. Merchant's Grilling will be selling lunch items, and Stephen Schmidt will play music.
Rain date is May 21.
