When the doors opened at 11 a.m. today, there was already a line forming outside the Vinton-Shellsburg High School, as the sidewalks filled with parents who had come to register their children for classes.
While an online registration option is available, Superintendent Mary Jo Hainstock said it seems that many families view registration day as a "rite of passage," something that should be done in person.
Students and parents learned about class assignments, bus routes, shared their demographic information and payed fees for the coming year. Administrators and some teachers helped the office staff process all of the information.
Hainstock said that many parents came with paperwork already filled out. She said the school is working on making the online registration process an easier option for families who prefer it. Registration continues until 7 p.m. this evening.
