What began as a simple backyard hobby shared among family and friends has grown into one of Shellsburg's most cherished Independence Day traditions - a celebration of freedom, patriotism, and small-town pride that continues to unite the community year after year.

For local pyrotechnician Phillip Travis, the annual Fourth of July fireworks display is more than a dazzling show of color and sound. It's a heartfelt gift to the hometown he loves.

The tradition traces its roots back to 2018, when Travis contacted his childhood neighbor, Larry Beatty, seeking permission to use the north pasture for what had become a passionate hobby. What started as an evening of fireworks for a handful of families quickly captured the imagination of the community. Word spread, neighbors gathered, and a new Shellsburg tradition was born.

By 2019, community organizations stepped in to help transform the display into a public celebration. The Shellsburg American Legion and the Shellsburg Lions Club partnered to support the first officially funded community show. Approximately 10 donors contributed a total of $2,687, demonstrating the town's early enthusiasm for the event.

As the years passed, the celebration continued to grow.

In 2021, the Sons of the American Legion took on a larger fundraising role, helping raise $6,250 to expand the display. Attendance increased, families returned year after year, and positive feedback poured in as the fireworks became a hallmark of Shellsburg's Independence Day festivities.

By 2025, organizers anticipated presenting an $8,000 show. However, as donations continued to arrive, Travis elevated the production, delivering the largest display in the event's history with more than $10,000 worth of fireworks lighting up the Benton County sky.

Now, as America celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2026, Travis is once again dreaming big.

Inspired by this historic milestone in the nation's history, he set a goal of creating a spectacular $16,000 display for Shellsburg. While fundraising has not yet fully reached that mark, Travis says he remains confident that the same community spirit that built the tradition will once again rise to the occasion.

"Without their support, this wouldn't be possible, and I'd probably just be having fun in my own backyard," Travis said. "I enjoy sharing my skills with my hometown families. It brings me joy to give back to my community through this event."

In many ways, the Shellsburg fireworks display reflects the very ideals celebrated on Independence Day - neighbors helping neighbors, volunteers giving their time and talents, and a community coming together in honor of country, family and freedom.

Organizers will spend the coming days recognizing top donors and sharing fun facts about the event, while encouraging residents to help spread the word by liking and sharing posts on social media.

Everyone is invited to bring their lawn chairs, gather family and friends, and celebrate America's birthday under the stars.

If community support continues as it has in years past, 2026 promises to be one of Shellsburg's biggest and brightest celebrations yet.

The show can be seen at 6446 32nd Ave., Shellsburg. This is the first farm on the south edge of town. Harbert Street will be closed at 6:00 p.m. for seating on the street, as well as a seating area along College Street and at the City Park.
