The Vinton-Shellsburg FFA chapter traveled to Calmar, Iowa, to compete in the Tri-State Dairy Cattle and Dairy Foods Judging Contest on September 15th. These members had the opportunity to test their knowledge and skills while competing against other FFA chapters from the surrounding area.
In the Dairy Cattle Judging contest, the first Vinton-Shellsburg team included McKenzie Rhinehart, Zada Mohr, and Raine Wheeler. The team earned 12th place overall. The second team, Landon Stein, Carter Good, and Parker Stein, placed 25th. Vinton-Shellsburg also had two teams compete in Dairy Foods Judging. The first team, made up of Madalynn Wood, Eleanor Stueck, and Bridgette Castle, earned 19th place. The second team included Amrie Wittmer, Ellee Grieder, and Kylie Hanover, and they earned 23rd place.
The contest gave members the chance to put their agriculture knowledge to work while gaining experience in judging and evaluating dairy products and cattle. Senior Bridgette Castle, who competed on one of the dairy food judging teams says, “I think Tri-State Dairy is an amazing experience for students, especially freshman, because it’s a fun event where you can learn a lot. It’s also a fairly easy contest to get involved in once you understand what you’re doing. I think it's a great opportunity for younger students to gain experience, build confidence and get more involved in agriculture and FFA.”
Overall, the Tri-State Dairy Cattle and Dairy Foods Judging Contest was a great opportunity for Vinton-Shellsburg FFA members to compete, learn, and represent their chapter.
