Some alert Vinton Today readers have observed some unusual work in progress at the Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School.
Superintendent Mary Jo Hainstock explains that what people are seeing is the complicated process required by law when removing material believed to contain asbestos.
"We want to replace the tile on the first floor, so we had to have the old tile abated since we know it has asbestos in it," said the Superintendent. "The law requires some very specific measures be taken and we are following the requirements."
Sump pump problem
There was also a problem with a sump pump at the building.
"We had a sump pump go out and the water filled the bottom part of the pit and mixed with the oil," says Hainstock.
