Dear Editor,
Many people will decide not to vote in the upcoming elections for various reasons; but if there was ever a critical time to do so, it is NOW! Get out of your easy chairs...throw down the dish towels and go vote.
I am 74 years old now. I joined the Young Democrats when I was a junior in high school. This was shocking to my family because both sides had been Republicans as far back as Teddy Roosevelt. But I stood my ground. I went door to door passing out pamphlets for L. Johnson who was running against B. Goldwater [for those of you who don't remember.] When I was expecting my third child, I made phone calls in support of George McGovern.
As I have always been proud of being a strong Democrat, I have never regretted any of my votes...until now. I voted for Joe Biden, and I regret it every single time I watch the news or look at my computer!
After earning two degrees in Iowa, I got sent to Wichita, KS in 1985 for a job promotion. While there, I decided to go back to college to get further education that would allow me to become a teacher. I had to take out student loans to attend Wichita State University. I signed the papers knowing full well that I had the responsibility to pay them back. When I got a job, I had to find a place to live, get a vehicle, etc. It was difficult at times, but I got the loans paid back. Millions of people did the same. I strongly oppose President Biden's actions to forgive $10,000 or $20,000 of student loans. These people signed papers promising to repay what was borrowed.
The biggest fault I find with our country's "leader" is the border crisis. His second-in-command said on Meet the Press that our borders are secure. I almost dropped my cup of coffee at her statement. [5.5 million have crossed the border since Biden took office.] This figure is probably much higher. The news shows hoards of these people crammed together wherever there is room for them. Resources will be used to house and feed them. Crime and violence will go up in these areas. Something needs to be done...and soon! Does the President have his head buried in the sand? He apparently can't take the hints from Governors Abbot and Desantis.
As I said, I deeply regret my vote! Don't get me wrong; I wouldn't have voted for Donald Trump. But that's another story. I truly believe that the Republicans need to control the House and the Senate for things to turn around. This country and our continued freedom depend on strong leaders. For this election I voted entirely for Republicans except for Liz Mathis. And I say this without any regrets.
Please look over the candidates...make wise decisions...and GO VOTE!!
Peggy Kelley
