Dear Editor,
The Iowa House presented House File 3, which severely restricts SNAP recipients on what they can purchase. Red meat is out. Bread is out. There are about 23 things that are actually in. Not surprisingly, Thomas Gerholt, our local representative from Atkins, supports this monstrous bill and is a co-sponsor.This is the kind of thing that should make Iowans proud. It's exactly the result we expected when we voted republican all down the line. This should create a warm glow in all our hearts. It's exactly what Jesus would do, and heaven knows the GOP abhors all things un-Christian.Well, I must admit I have heartburn anyway. Anthony Bopp

DE January 22, 2023, 5:46 am Well, Jesus did say "Suffer, little children..."

(Woo hoo! Look at me, cherry-pickin' just like a regular Sunday-goer! Can I get to Heaven now?)
GB January 22, 2023, 8:43 am Reform in this area is way overdue. I remember the many times I have been grocery stores making choices over different items and deciding what I can and can not afford only to find myself standing behind someone in checkout who clearly was not having to make the same choices. They would be purchasing whole ribeyes, lobsters, and a variety of other items I would consider high-end foods. Then to realize they were paying for these items with food stamps. I found this to be outrageous and clearly not what the program was designed for. I am in no way saying there are no legitimate cases of people needing assistance, but clearly, the abuses have been horribly out of control for decades.
DE January 23, 2023, 12:45 am I'll take "'Things that didn't happen' for $500, Mayim".

Y'all oughta at least switch up the "luxury items" when you repeat the same BS over and over again. Every single one of you stood behind the same person buying the same lobster & rib-eyes.
NG January 23, 2023, 2:21 pm Awesome comment DE. I have heard the same BS from every Non-Christian person who wants to look down on people in need of assistance. Yes if you are repeating crap like that you need to find something to do with your time. Believe me, I was on food stamps years ago for a couple of months when my husband died and there is not enough money to buy lobster and steak.

This bill has not been passed yet and it has to be approved by the United States Agriculture Department (USDA) who oversees SNAP and has to approve all changes. That is not likely to happen so the republicans once again make themselves look like fools, fools who look out for the wealthy and to hell with those in need. Reynolds has 1.9 Billion in surplus so Pat Grassley whining about saving money doesn't hold water.

Reynolds and her gang are also wanting to take taxpayer money and send kids to private school most of which are religious schools. So separation of church and state goes out the window. Again Reynolds is taking from the poor and giving to those who are not in need. That is what republicans always do, take from the poor and give to the rich. Give huge tax cuts, permanent tax cuts, to the rich and the tax cuts for working people expire. Someone has to pay for those huge tax cuts.

SG January 23, 2023, 2:58 pm Having been part of a family that blew all of their food stamps on pop, candy, chips, and steaks (there was no in-between) and then they would call at the end of the month because they were out of food...I'm not a fan of food stamps these families. I don't understand cutting out the "cheap" albeit bad food like white bread, rice and pasta. When you need to feed your children, this is what you buy...as far as cutting out the fresh meat, in favor of canned meat, the more expensive option...put some moms who buy groceries on this committee...

The message of the ministry of Jesus Christ is just overflowing in comments like this.
