Dear Editor,
I am writing to urge the state lawmakers from Benton County to reject Iowa House File 2665, which proposes the implementation of a raccoon bounty program. As residents of Benton County, we cannot afford to support such a wasteful and ineffective proposal. The allocation of $860,000 annually towards a bounty program for raccoons is simply unjustifiable, particularly when considering the pressing needs within our community and the state as a whole. Our taxpayer dollars should be directed towards initiatives that truly benefit our citizens and address critical issues facing our region. Instead of squandering resources on a program that wildlife experts agree will not effectively manage raccoon populations, our lawmakers should focus on supporting policies and programs that promote sustainable wildlife management, environmental conservation, and community well-being. I implore our state representatives and senators from Benton County to listen to the voices of their constituents and stand against House File 2665. Let us prioritize responsible stewardship of taxpayer funds and work towards solutions that serve the best interests of our community and our state.

DC March 28, 2024, 8:28 pm Let's all give organizations such as PETA a big thank you for causing these kinds of problems. The fur price is low and harvesting animals for same is part of the problem. Save them from a trap to get smashed by a car...

GB March 29, 2024, 7:21 am Peta and any other group or person's who do not understand wildlife do not understand the consequence we s either. Blame Disney.. They consistently come out with fictional movies for children depicting wild animals as human like with emotions of love and friendship. That’s the result of Liberals pushing dark agendas. I know of a private Nature Perserve thousands of acres in size where the management prided themselves in not allowing hunting. DNR officials warned them that the deer population had to be controlled in orderto maintain a healthy population of deer. They laughed.
A few short years later, they were so over populated with deer, most were in horrible condition and literally starving! It was horrible and totally unavoidable.
Eventually Wildlife management officials stepped in and after a ton of pressure from DNR and public out cry, hunters were sent in to thin the population drastically to save the rest. Regardless what species it is, deer, raccoons, fox, or wolves, they all have to be managed in a responsible way.
