On Sunday, President Biden released a statement announcing that he will not seek reelection. The statement reads in part, "It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term." He will address the nation later on this week.

With pressure mounting from his party, the handwriting was on the wall. With several missteps reported over the last several weeks during attempts to bolster his support, the party felt it would be better for him to step down.

The assassination attempt on former President Trump didn't help his poll numbers either.

In a post on X (Formerly Twitter), Biden endorsed Vice President Harris saying, "My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it's been the best decision I've made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats - it's time to come together and beat Trump. Let's do this."

I'm torn on this one. On the one hand, everyone voted in the Democratic Primary to elect Joe Biden and it feels like democracy is being destroyed out of fear by the party. On the other hand, it makes sense if the numbers are down. At last count 31 Congressmen and four Senators so far had officially asked him to step down. The media has turned on him like a rabid dog these last few weeks. It hasn't been fun to watch, if nothing else I felt a bit sorry for him. Once everyone has decided that he was out, there was nothing he could do.

Vice President. Kamala Harris would not be the first black woman to run on the Democrat ticket. The first was Shirley Anita Chisholm from New York. She was nominated by the Democrat party in 1972.

There's a lot of speculation that Michelle Obama will step up, or Gavin Newsom, California's Governor. We'll see. The Democratic National Convention takes place in Chicago August 19-22, 2024.

So pop some popcorn, and we'll find out in August who Trump will be facing in another debate.

GB July 21, 2024, 7:05 pm She will laugh her was through it like a donkey.
GB July 22, 2024, 5:51 am Talk about an attack on democracy. So 14 million voters in the primaries voted for Biden. He has now dropped out of the race and the Democrats elite will now decide who gets on the ticket?
For Biden's entire term they have been telling America he was fine. Now that Biden goes down in the polls to Trump, they turn on Biden. If Biden is not fit to run, he's not fit to serve out the rest of his term.
RS July 22, 2024, 11:50 am Gerald,

You do know that if President Biden would step down from the presidency now that VP Harris would automatically become President. I am ok with that but are you?
SB July 22, 2024, 1:30 pm Correction: Shirley Chisholm was not nominated by the Democratic Party in 1972. Ms. Chisholm ran for the Party's presidential nomination but she lost to fellow democrat Eugene McCarthy. McCarthy was nominated to represent the Democratic Party in the 1972 presidential election; he subsequently lost the race to Richard Nixon in the general election.

Editor’s note: I stand corrected! Thanks!
GB July 22, 2024, 10:53 pm RS,
Of course I know that. I suspect what may occur is if Harris does not poll better than Biden against Trump, the Democrats may invoke the 25th ammendment to replace Biden with Harris so they can get Harris in as the first female minority sworn in as President, even if she will only be in office a couple of months. They eat their own.
JH July 25, 2024, 3:34 pm First of all, as one of the 14 million voters, I don't really care that my vote didn't count, especially since it did. I voted for the Biden/Harris ticket (as did the other 13,999,999 people who voted), so to me it's still the same ticket.
What President Biden did was very selfless and patriotic; he gave up his chance for a second term for the good of his party, and most importantly the future of this nation. He didn't cave under pressure, he listen to people whose opinions he asked for and they advised him to step aside.
The only people fighting this now are Republicans who wanted Trump to run against the President. Trump is butt-hurt because now he has to face a trained former attorney general who will probably shread him in a debate.
Democrats are happy with the outcome and they don't particularly care what the GOP's reaction is. And the fact they are reacting at all shows something right there.
GB July 25, 2024, 9:53 pm It was no selfless act. It was a coup with Obama pulling the strings. I'd bet Biden was upset when he found out he had dropped out of the race. To say it was some independent thought Biden had is laughable. That guy can't figure out where to go without help from the Easter Bunny! The past 3 1/2 years have been embarrassing for most of us in this country.
