To the Editor:

I know there are some who would rather spread lies and misinformation than actually do the research. I also know that since this came from FEMA that plenty of others will proclaim it is all false because it comes from our government but none-the-less here is the truth.

Hurricane Helene: Rumor Response

Help keep yourself, your family and your community safe after Hurricane Helene by being aware of rumors and scams and sharing official information from trusted sources.

Do your part to the stop the spread of rumors by doing three easy things:

1. Find trusted sources of information. 2. Share information from trusted sources. 3. Discourage others from sharing information from unverified sources.

Rumor: FEMA does not have enough money to provide disaster assistance for Helene.

Fact: FEMA has enough money right now for immediate response and recovery needs. If you were affected by Helene, do not hesitate to apply for disaster assistance as there is a variety of help available for different needs.

Rumor: FEMA is asking for cash donations and turning away volunteers.

Fact: This is false: FEMA does not ask for or generally accept any cash donations or volunteers for disaster response. We do encourage people who want to help to volunteer with or donate cash to reputable voluntary or charitable organizations. After a disaster, cash is often the best way to help as it provides the greatest flexibility for these reputable organizations working on the ground to purchase exactly what is needed.

If you encounter someone claiming to represent FEMA and asking for donations, be careful as that is likely a scam. Government employees will never solicit money.

Rumor: Funding for FEMA disaster response was diverted to support international efforts or border related issues.

Fact: This is false. No money is being diverted from disaster response needs. FEMA's disaster response efforts and individual assistance is funded through the Disaster Relief Fund, which is a dedicated fund for disaster efforts. Disaster Relief Fund money has not been diverted to other, non-disaster related efforts.

Rumor: FEMA is confiscating donations for survivors.

Fact: Rumors about FEMA turning away donations, stopping trucks or vehicles with donations, confiscating and seizing supplies often spread after a disaster. These are all false.

FEMA does not take donations and/or food from survivors or voluntary organizations. Donations of food, water, or other goods are handled by voluntary agencies who specialize in storing, sorting, cleaning, and distributing donated items.

FEMA does not conduct vehicle stops or handle road closures with armed guards -- those are done by local law enforcement.

Rumor: FEMA will only provide $750 to disaster survivors to support their recovery.

Fact: This is false. One type of assistance that is often approved quickly after you apply is Serious Needs Assistance, which is $750 to help pay for essential items like food, water, baby formula, breastfeeding supplies, medication and other emergency supplies. There are other forms of assistance that you may qualify to receive once you apply for disaster assistance. As your application continues to be reviewed, you may still receive additional forms of assistance for other needs such as support for temporary housing and home repair costs. Learn more about the types of assistance available. If you have questions about your disaster assistance application and what you qualify for, contact us at 1-800-621-3362 to speak with a FEMA representative.

GB October 4, 2024, 9:19 pm Bla, Bla, Bla..

We spend billions upon billions for Ukraine and give illegals visa cards of $2,200 without question on the spot and without delay! Estimates are currently at over one billion dollars of our tax dollars have been wasted on these gift cards to illegal aliens!
Yet a flood victim in North Carolina, will get a measiy $750 after a waiting period. I don't know how one justifies spending billions of tax dollars on illegals! Any miserable excuse or justification for doing so is about as ignorant and stupid as it gets. Nothing based on rational thought or an ounce of intelligence will ever justify the actions and incompetence of the Biden/ Harris Crime Families and their corrupt friends in Congress and the main stream media. It takes a really special idiot to even try to justify the incompetence we have running the show right now.
VB October 4, 2024, 9:54 pm You're the one spreading lies & misinformation. Listen to all of the people living this hell instead of the government. That $750 immediate assistance they brag about is not helpful. First off, they have to find wifi to apply for it, many of these people are stranded with absolutely nothing. Then, you have to get approved, & if you are approved, it takes another 10 days before they have access to it, if they can find a bank & prove their identity. Secondly, it's a loan, if they don't pay it back within a year then they can seize the people's property. Yes, they definitely are withholding aid, a fema representative was just beat up by the locals this morning for doing exactly that. The people there have had enough, and they are no longer putting up with it. The government has been trying to get the people's land for a few years now for the lithium, & quartz, & the citizens refuse to sell. Create a "natural disaster" by cloud seeding, & you can make demolish their land & take it from them. Next year they plan on opening up the mining, that they submitted permits for at the end of September. This IS a land grab, & people better wake up to what the hell is going on. These people have lost everything, you are implying that all of these people are lying about the hell they are living.
BK October 6, 2024, 11:16 am For all your arguments . . . the Whitehouse itself stated that FEMA funds were being used for illegals way back in 2022 . . . FYI . . .

DL October 7, 2024, 2:51 pm You people are so sick in the head, that no amount of deprograming will ever help you. It's really sad that you have to live a life of paranoia because someone else has total control of your mind.
DL October 7, 2024, 2:56 pm Rosemary Unfortunately, advising this group of 4-5 people, to find a trusted source is feeble. They would likely look to a 5 year old on the street or the 5 year old that's campaigning against Kamala Harris.
GB October 7, 2024, 10:13 pm Biden and Harris need to be fired!!!
