VS senior Lauren Upmeyer was awarded a Conference Academic Award at the swim meet last Saturday. She is a well-deserving student athlete who maintains a GPA of 3.987!

Last Saturday was the North Central Swim Conference meet in Boone. Unlike other sports, swimming is not divided into classes - schools of all sizes and locations compete against each other all season. There is only one other school in the WaMaC Conference that has a swim program (Williamsburg and Clear Creek Amana are a combined team). So for swimming, the conferences are redrawn. The NSCS includes VSU, Williamsburg, Decorah, Boone, Newton, Grinnell, and Oskaloosa.
As was the case with many other teams as well, VSU was down in numbers due to conflicts with band and choir performances elsewhere in the state. The girls that did swim made a solid showing for VSU in a very competitive field.
Geordyn Webster swam her fastest 50 Freestyle of the season at 26.20 to grab 2nd place. She also dropped time in her 100 Freestyle to take 4th place in 58.14 seconds (even after the touchpad failed to pick up her initial touch finish).
VS freshman Justyce Dominick dropped a couple of seconds in both her 200 Freestyle and 500 Freestyle, taking 9th and 7th places respectively. Dominick joined her sister (Webster), Lexi Goodell & Clarissa Carolan for a season-best 2:01.63 in the Medley Relay for a 6th place podium finish. Dominick, Webster, Goodell and Maren Redlinger brought their 200 Freestyle Relay time down and tied for 6th place as well.
Saturday was a good test of where our times are. I'm happy to see we're maintaining and even dropping time. Districts are less than 2 weeks away now - so hopefully we can keep that trend rolling. We'll keep up our training intensity and focus a lot on starts, turns, finishes and relay exchanges.
The IBSSS pool still isn't operational - so we continue to travel to Amana and Waterloo for pool practices when we can. Our home meet with Williamsburg on Thursday may have to happen at Williamsburg, instead of them coming to us. We're all anxious to have our home pool back up and running!
