A baby girl was surrendered under Iowa's Safe Haven Act.
Iowa Health & Human Services said that the baby was born on September 8, 2026, and is currently in the care of a foster family while she is awaiting a permanent placement.
The Safe Haven Act allows parents who are in a crisis situation, the option to surrender their newborn baby within 90 days of giving birth if they determine that they cannot provide necessary care for the baby. The Safe Haven Law seeks to provide a safe alternative for parents who feel that they are unable to care for their newborn and ensure the child's safety and well-being. After surrendering a baby, the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services places the child with an approved foster family and works toward finding a permanent home for the infant.
The baby is now the 82nd Safe Haven child since the law passed more than 20 years ago.
