After the monthly meeting of Post 57 of the Vinton, Iowa American Legion, a Flag Retirement Ceremony was performed. According to estimates, there were over 500 flags in need of disposal.

Thie ceremony began at approximately 8:00 P.M. at the Post 57 American Legion located at 105 N R Ave. in Vinton. The flags are disposed of by draping them over a metal frame and then burned using an accelerant.

It took nearly two and a half hours for the flags to be completely burned during the ceremony. The Flag Retirement Ceremony took place on the north west side of the property, away from the building.

Flags in need of disposal can be brought to Post 57. There is a marked container on the north side of the building in which to drop your flags off.
