Dear Editor:

Another shooting - more children massacred. Liberals blame the gun, but it is the shooter who should be blamed. The Tennessee shooter was mentally ill and evil; and as we have learned mixed up on his/her gender. Good Grief! President Biden has demanded a ban on Assault Weapons, but no one has been able to come up with a definition as to what they are. The ban during the Clinton Administration did nothing to arrest the murder rate - a failure; so too would be another ban. One suggestion was that any gun crime would be a federal offense with lengthy imprisonment. I don't think this would be the correct step. Mental health is something to look at in a serious manner. I do not know nor have I seen a solution to the violence that has occurred in our country for a very long time perhaps more so in the last 5-10 years.

The cure is - Secure the Perimeter. If nothing else bolt locks from the inside on all doors.

AR-15 semi-auto rifles are weapons of war - no infantry soldier would go to war with one. It is not a battle rifle. I do own a .223 semi-auto rifle - it is an AM-15 built by Anderson Manufacturing located in Kentucky. I am not a danger to myself or others - but if I read the President correctly, he wants confiscation. I generally shoot for recreation; my hunting and trap shooting days are over. So of the hundreds/ thousands of semi-auto rifle owners are to give them up to a government and a President that doesn't know or understand the real problem? If this government were serious about our violence problem - one thing to do would be to shut down the border. No drugs, no fentanyl, no sex trafficking, no more undocumented criminals or gang members. That would prove Pres. Biden is serious.

Well that's my piece and I'm sticking to it - I am sure the naysayer critics will undoubtedly have the answer. Stay tuned - your mileage may vary.

Regards,

John Stiegelmeyer

RB March 30, 2023, 1:53 pm I think you should revisit data on the assault weapons ban. Murder were reduced. It would be easy to define what type of weapon should be banned. Magazine capacity is a good start. So it’s all about mental illness? How about a federal red flag law, universal background checks, and waiting periods?

Secure the perimeter you say? Who pays for that and schools are underfunded now. The solution is an easy one. You break our laws, are a domestic abuser, mentally ill, etc. then you can’t purchase a weapon. If you break our laws then you turn your weapons in. Want to own a gun? Follow our laws!
KP March 30, 2023, 2:07 pm Spot on! Could there be anything clearer than government "shall not infringe"?? Unfortunately, there are already many laws that violate the constitution in this area.
PK March 30, 2023, 3:29 pm HOORAY JOHN!!! You hit it out of the park. President Biden is a joke!! He can only focus on one thing at a time. What is it this week? Just wait for the warm weather in the areas where all the 5 million illegal immigrants are. Crime will skyrocket!! [Rapes, Muggings, Home Invasions, Drug Dealings, and Murders] What a wonderful wonderful world it will be. THANKS MR. PRESIDENT!!!
JS March 30, 2023, 4:42 pm Well, Braden - you have an answer for everything. How much does a deadbolt cost? five bucks. Relatively easy to get and install. Plastic covers on windowed doors (plastic covers are designed to be extremely tough and hard to break- or so my security friend tells me.- again relatively inexpensive and easy to install. Finding the money is not a problem many parents would be willing to fund and install.

As to "assault weapons" ban - just how do you make that work -- last count there were north of 2,000,000 semi-auto rifles in the hands of our citizens. It is not easy to identify by our stupid congress and admin. They are not knowledgeable on the types of firearms or ammunition. Stupid is as stupid does. We have a problem with gangs and mental health. The shooters have left plenty of clues, but none were acted on. So give an answer on how to make "red flag" laws and not confiscate without due process. Or just have a neighbor point the finger to get even.

Solutions to violence may not be easy. securing the perimeter is; our Chief Paxton can offer suggestions, and the parents and teachers can do the job.
AB March 30, 2023, 7:53 pm I find myself agreeing with much of what John says.

Mental health is definitely something that should be taken more seriously, and we should be very critical of initiatives by our governor and legislators to reduce funding for mental health programs in the state.

I personally do not blame the gun for gun violence. Nor do I blame the perpetrator, completely. I blame the law makers for a perpetual failure to enact any sort of sensible restrictions on gun ownership.

John seems to want to put the entire blame of mass shootings on the shoulders of mentally unstable people doing the shooting, but doesn't seem to want to do anything to restrict gun ownership from mentally unstable people (presumably because a lot of those people would vote Republican).

We need to separate unstable people from guns. That can only happen through sensible gun restriction legislation.
PK March 31, 2023, 7:52 am The BIG QUESTION about background checks is, "Will they pick up on someone seeing a psychiatrist for wanting to hurt people, or if the person has been in a hospital for depression or violent feelings toward others?" Will all the gun shops ACTUALLY do the background checks if they are required in all 50 states? PROBABLY NOT!!

The Nashville shooter had no criminal record, but he was seeing a therapist for emotional problems. Then there is the patient/doctor privilege. How far can they legally go in informing officials?

There are so many questions. I just hope and pray that someone can answer them and soon!!
DE April 1, 2023, 4:45 am So predictable.

"Let's arm teachers! Problem solved!" says the people that don't trust teachers to teach.

"It's not the guns - it's the people!" says the people that want every "people" to have access to guns.

"It's not a gun control problem - it's a mental health problem!" says the people that regularly fight against increased access to mental health care.

Str8 white shooter
Str8 white shooter
Str8 white shooter
Str8 white shooter
Str8 white shooter
Str8 white shooter
Str8 white shooter
(ad infinitum ad nauseum)
Trans shooter
"OMG! See? We told you those trans people were a problem!"

"There's really nothing we can do to prevent it," says the people of the only country in the world where it happens regularly.
PK April 1, 2023, 10:15 am With ALL the controversy about guns and background checks and shootings, we have a president who shoots his "concerned" look at the people in Mississippi. A "rolling stone" can never grow moss, but the town of Rolling Fork can deal with both a tornado and a president who doesn't even know where he is. I'm certain he was a comfort to them!!
GB April 4, 2023, 12:32 am Schools are not underfunded. School Districts get a huge amount of money from your taxes. It's what they do with that money that makes them underfunded.
Teachers in Israel are armed and trained. When was the last time you saw on the news that they had a school shooting? If you want to deter a threat, you have to harden the target.
It's easy to Monday morning quarterback yet the murder rates did not go down under the Clinton gun bans. The criminals didn't pay any attention to it. To blame the problem on guns is like blaming a vehicle for DWI or if someone attacks a person with a hammer, blaming the hammer. Accountability has to be placed on the human committing the act. To do anything else is idiotic. It's that same thinking that has now made Chicago and New York two of the most dangerous cities in the world. Lock up the criminals and keep them locked up. Sure expand mental health and fund it by ending the bs free programs that accomplish nothing productive except to buy votes and keep people dependent on the government led by the same old lame politicians.
DC April 4, 2023, 9:20 am Go Gerald....

Ban kool-aid. Jim Jones killed 971 people with it.
You could double the budgets of schools, and in a couple of years, they would want more.

DE April 4, 2023, 4:07 pm Google is your friend. Why is it always the "all politicians are bad" types that eagerly parrot easily disproven political BS?

While Chicago may not be #1. The website you chose was way off as well. Remember Google is your friend also..

Has anyone else seen the one common denominator among all these US cities in their lame leadership? "Google is your friend."
