Dear Editor,
I would like to thank the Benton County Board of Supervisors for sending a letter of disapproval of the construction of the proposed Morgan Valley Energy Center to the Linn County Board of Supervisors, Linn County Public Health, Department of Natural Resources, and the Iowa Utilities Commission. Shame on Alliant Energy wanting to build their power plant 5 miles west of Cedar Rapids next to the Benton County line near Atkins so that the Benton County residents may have to share the potential hazardous environmental emissions and risks. Yet Linn County will probably still receive all of the expected future tax revenue. I suggest building the power plant south of Cedar Rapids if needed next to the energy hungry data centers. Cedar Rapids already has ADM and General Mills in the area. I am a life- long farmland owner and operator in Benton County north of Newhall and now retired and living in Atkins. I do not like our prime farmland covered with industrial cement. Personal health means more to me than money. I would add that our current land use policy (Benton County Agricultural Preservation Act) has worked well for Benton County residents for several years and I hope it continues. Again, THANK YOU Benton County supervisors!
Terry Hertle – Former Benton County Supervisor
