Vinton-Shellsburg boys soccer team shared their accomplishments with the Vinton Lions Club on Wednesday, May 12th at the noon meeting.
The 36 players on the Vinton-Shellsburg boys soccer team have accomplished something that not many VS teams in any sport have achieved, they are undefeated Wamac Champions! They are currently 13-0 and ranked 2nd in the state in class 2-A. They are the only undefeated team in 2-A.
The high school program was started in 2012 and is coached by Kyle McAbee, who was a player on that first team. Before they started playing "school soccer" they learned the fundamentals and joy of playing in the youth soccer program started by Cal and Megan Rickels a number of years ago. They've come a long way, scoring 87 goals for the season while giving up only 6, an amazing statistic. This team has also established a number of team and individual records that are likely to stand for quite some time.
They finish the regular season tomorrow at Solon and then have a bye in the first round of post-season play. Hopefully, their season will end at the State Tournament in Des Moines in a few weeks. Congratulations guys and good luck!
