Secretary of Homeland Security, Markwayne Mullin, announced that his daughter Larra has committed to wrestling for the University of Iowa. In his statement he said, " Christie and I can’t wait to see what God has in store for her. Time flies!"
A bit about Markwayne
He said he learned from his dad to work hard. The youngest of seven, life wasn't a piece of cake when he started out. Born with a club foot and speech impediment, he overcame those issues. His family is also part of the Cherokee Nation.
He and Christie met in the 3rd grade school, and he said he knew in 8th grade that he wanted to marry her, but she didn't know yet. A year out of high school, they married, then went on to Missouri Valley College where he attended on a wrestling scholarship. Due to his father's failing health, he left college early, returning to Oklahoma to manage the family's plumbing business, while he continued his education at Oklahoma State.
He ran for the U.S. Senate and was sworn in in 2023 and served until 2026 when he was confirmed to be the Secretary of Homeland Security.
and Larra...
His daughter, Larra, is one of six children in the Mullin family. Following in her dad's footsteps, the grass isn't growing under her feet either. She has authored her first book with Ellie Gottheimer, called "Shmoo & Ozzie go to Washington." The two young women met while their dads served together in Washington D.C. Ellie is from New Jersey and her dad Josh Gottheimer, is a Democratic representative, while Larra's dad was a Republican Senator. The two became friends and decided to write a book for kids about bipartisanship for kids.
Larra said, "We felt we were the perfect people to speak about this because we couldn’t be more different, but yet we couldn’t be better friends. We wanted to change children’s outlook on politics and show them how important it is to work with others even if they are different. So many people believe it is Right vs. Left when really it should be Right and Left vs. the problem. Also, letting people know that you can still be friends and disagree politically… With both our dads being in politics and us being around DC we wanted to share the side we see."
So now you know a bit more about Larra if you follow girls wrestling in Iowa!
