If the phrase “Freckleface Strawberry” sounds familiar, it’s because the ACT 1 Summer Camp kids will be performing the same show that starred Taylor Berry in Vinton-Shellsburg High School spring musical. Marcy Horst, who directed the high school version, is also the Summer Camp director. Several older students are assisting Marcy..

The children have been rehearsing for weeks, and held dress rehearsal yesterday morning in the VSHS auditorium, where they will perform three shows,  Friday and Saturday at 7 pm and Sunday at 2 pm. Tickets are $7 for adults, $2 for students.

The musical is based on the book by red-headed actress Julianne Moore, a freckled child who earned the nickname Freckleface Strawberry at age 7.

“Freckleface Strawberry was her nickname when she was seven because she was covered in freckles and had very red hair. She hoped that they would go away when she grew up, but they didn’t,” says the official Freckleface Strawberry web site. The book and musical tell the story of how she tried to adjust to her unique appearance while also dealing with all the other pressures that age, from boys to toys to friendship. It’s about  a girl “who’s learning to love the skin she’s in. Because after all, the things that make you different also make you YOU.”
