Fireman Dan McKenna teaches students how to use a fire hose during last year’s Fire Prevention Week events. Children will again visit the fire station, welcome firemen to their classrooms and ride fire trucks as they learn about fire prevention and safety.

“Best day ever!”

This exclamation by several kindergarten students as they rode a fire truck has been echoed by several local firefighters, including the late Bob LaGrange, who on his last visit to the fire station looked around at the children and said, “Best ever on the fire department.”

It’s Fire Prevention Week again, and students and firefighters will spend several hours this week discussing fire prevention, how to call 911, having an escape plan and family meeting place in case there is a fire.

The week also includes the favorite activities: Fire truck rides, the chance for second graders to learn how to activate a fire hose during the tour of the Vinton fire station.

The Vinton firefighters will visit preschool kindergarten and first grade classes at Tilford on Monday. Second-graders will visit the fire station on Tuesday. And the legendary fire truck rides for kindergarten and first-graders will take place Thursday. In Shellsburg, the firefighters will visit the older students Thursday morning and then give rides to the kindergarten students in the afternoon.

The Vinton Fire Department’s annual Fire Prevention Week breakfast will take place on Sunday, Oct. 14.
