ACT I of Benton County is pleased to announce that we will be holding auditions for our upcoming musical production of Disney’s Newsies. Auditions will be held on Sunday April 22nd from 2-4PM and Monday April 23rd from 6:30-8:30PM, at the ACT I Centre located at the old West School.
There are several roles for both youth and adults in this musical story based on the real-life Newsboy Strike of 1899. The musical tells the story of Jack Kelly, a rebellious newsboy who dreams of a life as an artist away from the big city. After publishing giant Joseph Pulitzer raises newspaper prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack and his fellow newsies take action and organize a strike. With help from the intrepid reporter Katherine Plumber, all of New York City soon recognizes the power of young people.
All youth roles require singing and dancing, most adult roles require singing. There are a few minor adult roles that are spoken only. Roles to be cast include the following:
Jack Kelly – Leader of the Newsies, Male age 16-20
Katherine Plumber – A feisty young reporter, Female age 17-20
Crutchie – A Newsie with a bum leg, Male age 13-17
Joseph Pulitzer – Publisher of the World, a no-nonsense businessman, Male age 40-60
Davey – A new Newsie, more bookish than Jack, Male age 15-20
Les – Davey’s fearless younger brother, Male age 11-15
Medda Larkin – A vaudeville star, owns her own theater, Female age 25-45
Newsies Ensemble – Male/Female ages 11-20
Multiple adult supporting roles – Male/Female, all ages
Performance dates for Disney’s Newsies are scheduled for August 3rd, 4th, 10th, and 11th at 7PM and August 5th and 12th at 2PM.
