Eliana Krutzfeldt poses for a photo at the Love for Lizzy event. Her mom says the VS swimmer is one of her favorite people.

The friends and swimming teammates of Vinton-Shellsburg/Union’s Lizzy Moore easily raised at least $5,000 in last Saturday’s event, which was the first of a two-weekend Swim-A-Thon designed to show support to Lizzy and her family and help them with the costs of fighting cancer.

Joining the VSU team and coach Ashley Hesson were the VS/CPU Stormin’ Vikings, as well as many friends, family and VS swimming alumni.

The event includes all-day swimming, and donuts. Last weekend’s activities also included a silent auction and lunch.

One of the most popular items from the silent auction was a metal flag made by VS alum Jacob Rammelsberg. It was just his second flag. Many area businesses also donated items which were sold last week.

“It was a great day,” said Hesson. “We like to say a big thanks to everyone who helped make it so successful: Volunteers, swimmers, auction buyers…it was great to see so many communities supporting Lizzy & her family.”

This Saturday, says Hesson, will be a fun day of swimming. Dan & Mike LaGrange (swim supporters & Lizzy’s employers at LaGrange Pharmacy) will be swimming, as well as kids from Lizzy’s club team, high school teammates, and relays of “Swim Moms” and “Swim Dads.”

“It should be another great day,” says Hesson.
