Residents throughout the state, and beyond, are expressing thanks to police for their service — and the risks they take every day — following the shooting earlier this week of two officers in the Des Moines area.
The Vinton Police Department acknowledged those who have expressed support on its Facebook page with these words.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their outpouring of support in light of recent national events. So many members of the community have taken their time to share their words of appreciation for the Officers and staff, and other expressions of their never-ending support. It is our goal, every day and in every way, to serve the community and to keep Vinton safe. Your support and recognition of our efforts reinforces our level of standards and touches the heart of each member of this Department. THANK YOU!”
The fatal shootings of Urbandale Police Officer Justin Martin, 24, and Des Moines Police Sgt. Anthony “Tony” Beminio, 38, came a year after the murder of former Vinton resident Daniel Scott Webster, and Albuquerque police officer, by a career criminal in New Mexico. Webster’s local family members, including his three daughters, have been sharing memories and receiving words of thanks from many this week as they mark the anniversary.
Police departments throughout the nations have offered tributes to the Iowan officers who died this week. The photo accompanying this story is from the Wilbraham, Mass., Police Department.
