V-S FFA Member Applies for State Office

By: Franki Evans, Co-Reporter

Madeline Moen, our 2017-2018 Treasurer, represented our chapter as a State Officer Candidate in hopes of achieving one of the three eligible positions on the state officer team of nine. “The process was long, it was a two day process. There were seven rounds of interviews that included a speech, a typed essay, twelve one-on-ones, two one-on-twelves, and two interviews with industry professionals.” said Madeline when asked how the process was. When I asked if the experience was worth it her response was “It was definitely worth it, I learned a lot about the interview process and this experience will greatly help me with other interviews in the future.” Our chapter is proud of Madeline for trying something new and we will miss her next year as she attends college at Iowa State University.

District Review Night

By: Shelby McDonald, VS FFA Co-Reporter

On February 2nd we had three FFA members go to Sumner-Fredericksburg to run for district office. The members spent weeks doing practice interviews with community members to have them give them feedback to prepare for their interviews. The members that interviewed for district office were Isaac Wiley, Shelby McDonald, and Kaylee Sorum. At the interview they had to take a general knowledge test about FFA, an individual interview with 4 FFA members from around the district, 2 state officers and a past district officer, then members had to do a round of group interviews with other FFA members. The next day the ballot was sent to FFA advisor with the names of 2 members who were balloted per office to be voted upon at district convention. Our chapter had one member make ballot and that was Isaac Wiley. That night we also had eight Iowa degree applications reviewed and all eight were accepted and they will receive their Iowa degree at state convention on April 24th. The members that will get their Iowa degrees are Eric Henkle, Grant Ries, Brianna Lundvall, Jakob Long, Shelby McDonald, Nikki Vennemen, Collin Henry and Isaac Wiley.

This is something that they will continue to do throughout their high school career. A special thanks to FS for giving these students the opportunity to do something like this!

V-S FFA Lights and Roping Removal

By: Franki Evans, Co-Reporter

On January 6th, VS FFA members helped remove the lights and roping that was put up before Christmas around Vinton. We had a lot of great help from our members, which helped make the task go much quicker. There were lights and roping all throughout the downtown and other locations around the city.. We put up and take down along with some students from National Honor Society and many other volunteers. When we were done helping, everyone goes to the First Christian Church to enjoy Pizza Hut, that’s always a plus! Now that the chilly season is over we are ready for summer!

V-S FFA Holiday Party Lock-In

By: Franki Evans, Co-Reporter

The Vinton Shellsburg FFA Chapter held an annual holiday party over Christmas break, and there were 35 members that attended the lock-in. Denise Evans, Marge McDonald, Erica White, and Erik Moen were the chaperons for the event along with advisors Melissa Heeren and Louise Fleming. Members spent most of their time in the gym listening to music, playing basketball, making gingerbread houses, playing board games, or blowing up balloons then popping them. Members enjoyed popcorn and watched movies in the choir room. Some members relaxed in the Hall of Fame hallway or sat in the commons eating all of great snack foods that were provided by all members. Although it was a fun night, everyone was ready to go home and catch up on the rest that was missed that night. We had a great turn out and we are ready for the nex lock-in!
