By Janet Woodhouse, Coach
Our 2017 girls golf team had an exceptional year on the links; they achieved a 46-8 overall record and the varsity team qualified for State. These girls’ golf team members were also achievers in the classroom. Each year the Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union presents an award for excellence in academic achievement. Eleven girls were members of the Vinton-Shellsburg 2017 girls’ golf team and achieved a team G.P.A. of 3.827; this is the highest team grade point average in my 24 years of coaching.
This award is presented to teams who achieve a 3.6 or better G.P.A. in classroom work while actively participating in interscholastic athletics. These current students and recent graduates of Vinton-Shellsburg High School exemplify the excellence achieved by the young people of today and the future of tomorrow.
Six team members were also recognized as 2017 Academic All-Conference. Please step forward as your name is called. They are Emily Blake, Halie Engler, Abbe Wilson, Brandi Gerber, Alex Maynard and Rachel Tandy. To earn this honor, each golfer must be a junior or senior and have a 3.5 G.P.A. or better.
In addition, Hallie Engler earned First Team Academic All-State. To qualify she had to have a GPA of 3.7 or better and a 27 or higher ACT score.
Emily Blake, Halie Engler, Brandi Gerber, Rachel Tandy, Lillie Lamont and Alex Maynard were WaMaC Conference Champions, won the Prairie High School Invitational, were the 1st place team at Regional #1 and were State qualifiers last June at Lake Panorama Golf Course in Panora. They brought home a 6th place team trophy which can be viewed in the trophy case outside the gym. Congratulations, ladies, for a great finish to the 2017 girls golf season!
Brandi Gerber and Rachel Tandy were named to the 3A all District Team by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association.
We congratulate all of these young ladies upon a very successful year at the golf course and in the classroom! They represented Vinton-Shellsburg High School in great fashion this past spring!
