The Vinton-Shellsburg Class of 2004 has lost another of its members. Stephanie Ollinger, 31, died of a sudden illness on Oct. 1, in Wisconsin, where she had worked as the mid-day host for WYTE 106.5 in Plover, Wisconsin.
“Stevi,” as she was known to her radio audience, was the daughter of Lynda and the late Mark Ollinger. In 2014, she had married John Harry, at the Wisconsin State House. He too, works at 106.5 FM; the couple frequently interviewed country music stars together.
At Vinton-Shellsburg, she was a cheerleader, says Allison Fank, one of Ollinger’s best friends.
“She was actively with youth group and other activities at St. Mary’s Church. She loved 80’s rock and animals. Stephanie was friends with everybody and the kindest person anyone would ever encounter,” says Fank.
Ollinger first used her on-air name of “Stevi” in her previous position at WMMM in Madison, Wisconsin. Earlier in her radio career she had been known as “Sloan” at KXXR in Minneapolis and KFMW in Waterloo. In addition to her on-air duties at WYTE, she also tracked a well-received night shift on NRG’s Variety Hits station WBCV 107.9 Big Cheese.
NRG Media General Manager Kurt Luchs says of the her death, “Stevi had a beautiful voice and a bubbly, irrepressible personality that just leaped out of the radio at you, daring you not to be happy when you had her tuned in. We were unbelievably fortunate to have her, and unspeakably saddened to lose her so unexpectedly. She was well loved inside and outside of this building. To say she will be missed doesn’t begin to do her justice.”
A celebration of Stevi’s life will be held at Boston Funeral Home in Stevens Point, Wisc., on Saturday, Oct. 15. Visitation starts at 1:30 p.m., services will begin at 3 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
