URBANA – Delores A. Newton, 93, died Sunday, March 18, 2018, at her home in Urbana following a long illness.

A Celebration of Delores’ Life will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 23, 2018, at the Urbana Christian Church with Pastor Ryan Daisy officiating. Memorial visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 22, at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home, Vinton. Inurnment will be held in the Urbana Cemetery.

Delores was born August 22, 1924, in Marengo, Iowa, the daughter of John and Christina Schumaker Wendell. She was raised and attended school in Marengo.

On November 7, 1942, Delores was united in marriage with Harold G. Newton in Lancaster, Missouri. He preceded her in death on June 10, 1974.

Delores worked at the school in Urbana as a custodian for 12 years, retiring August 20, 1986.

She was a long-time member of the Urbana Christian Church and was very active in Christian Women’s Fellowship. She was a 25+ year volunteer at the Vinton Annex and drove friends to get groceries and to doctor appointments. She enjoyed baking and sharing her baked goods with others, her plants and bird-watching. She also enjoyed playing cards and was a member of the 500 Club at HACAP, and she was also a member of the Birthday Club. She could often be found sitting on her porch with her dog, watching the activities of the neighborhood.

Delores is survived by two children, Roger (Nancy) Newton and Sharon McElrath; four grandchildren: Tammy (Scott) Hendryx, Deborah Harrison, Kimberly (Steve) Pribyl and Jerry (Christina) McElrath; five great-grandchildren: Mitch (Jenna) and Gordy Harrison, Matthew (Kristen) and Jarret McElrath and Carly Hendryx; one great-great-grandson, Carter Alan Harrison; and her dog, Paige.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold; son-in-law, Bob McElrath; and grandson, Mark Harrison.

A memorial fund has been established.
