BRANDON – Lt. Col. (Ret.) Kathryn L. Close, 72, of San Antonio, Texas, formerly of Brandon, died Wednesday, February 21, 2018, at Brooke Army Medical Center in Fort Sam Houston, Texas, following a long battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 10, 2018, at Blessed Hope Church in Vinton with Chris Cantrell officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday. Interment with military rites will be in Bear Creek Cemetery, rural Vinton.
Kathryn was born October 8, 1945, in rural Walker, Iowa, the daughter of Paul V. and Hazel V. Hopper Close. She attended school in Brandon and graduated from Washington High School in Vinton in 1964. She graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1967. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Loretta Heights College in Denver, Colorado, in 1983, and her Master’s of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas.
Kathryn worked as a registered nurse at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids and Abbott Northwestern in Minneapolis, MN, before joining the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War in 1971. She was enlisted for 23 years, serving in Misawa, Japan, Wiesbaden, Germany and England and on several bases in the United States. She was at Wiesbaden when the Iran hostages were released, and her service included Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. She retired in 1994. Following her retirement from the military, she worked at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio and fully retired in 2010.
Kathryn was a member of the Society of Air Force Nurses and held various elected offices within that organization. She was also a member of the Women’s Overseas League. She was a volunteer driver for the Low Vision Club and enjoyed her bowling league, reading and playing Bridge.
Kathryn is survived by five nephews: Dean (Valerie) Close of Brandon; David (Cheryl) Close and Kevin (Caroline) Close of Independence; Stephen (Barb) Close of Urbana; and Andrew Close of Marion; once niece, Nerme Close of Marion; and numerous great-nieces and –nephews and great-great-nieces and –nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Ronald Close; and sister-in-law Cheryl Close.
