Lonny Dave Walker, formerly of Vinton, died August 29, 2018 at his home in Kearney, Missouri with family at his bedside.
Lonny was born August 30, 1947 to Rhoda Walker (DeVault) and Paul Vernon Walker. He was the youngest of five children and grew up north of Vinton on the family farm where his family was known for their delicious sweetcorn.
Despite being a self-described hellion as a teenager with endless adventures, Lonny voluntarily joined the military at age 19. He served in the United States Army from November 1966 to November 1968. He was a radioman with the 1st and 7th Cavalry in Vietnam.
On February 20, 1970 he married Ronda L. Burkey and their adventures began. Throughout his life, Lonny worked in construction, manufacturing, and as an industrial electrician. More importantly, he was an avid Bass fisherman belonging to Bass Federation Fishing Clubs in Iowa, taking part in tournaments up and down the Mississippi River, lakes across the Mid-West,, and even traveled to Canada for more fishing adventures. He enjoyed hunting raccoon and deer with his dad, friends, and his favorite son-in-law. He shared his love of fishing with many throughout the years and sparked many ‘obsessions’ with the activity. His infectious laugh and crazy sense of humor were always cherished.
While sometimes seen as gruff on the outside, Lonny deeply loved his family. Aside from a few close friends, one of his most dedicated fishing partners was his wife Ronda, and she was often seen reeling in a fish of her own, or loading and driving the boat. After receiving a lung transplant in 2006, he and Ronda moved to Kearney, Missouri to be closer to the lake and their daughter Cody, her husband Jeff, and their two daughters Isabel and Julia. While living in Missouri Lonny naturally spent a great deal of time in the outdoors, fishing at area lakes, and teaching his granddaughters the joys of fishing, identifying trees and animals, shooting guns, spitting, driving, and who knows what else.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Bonnie Primmer and Judy Jones; Nephews Scott Yerkes, Tony Yerkes, Brok Burkey, In-laws Lyla and Lawrence Wubbena, brother-in-law Rick Burkey, best friends Chuck Phelps, Phil Doyle, and his much loved ’Jenny’ Whitson.
His legacy continues with his wife of 47 years Ronda, daughter Cody Walker (Jeffrey) Holmes, granddaughters Isabel and Julia Holmes, all of Kearney, Missouri. Brothers Larry (Joann) and Okee (Lora) Walker of Vinton; brother-in-law Roice Burkey of Alburnett; multiple nieces and nephews he was close to, especially Tammy Neuendorf and Dick (Ny) Yerkes; and his many friends.
Visitation/Memorial service will be on Thursday, September 6th from 6-8pm at Prairie Creek Christian Church with a graveside service at 10:30am on Friday, September 7th.
In Lieu of flowers, the family asks that you send donations in honor of Lonny Walker to the Iowa Donor Network at 550 Madison Avenue, North Liberty, Iowa 52317. Any personal donations will be used, as needed, to ease the burden of transitioning life to a ‘new normal’ without Lonny.
The family also asks that you spread the word on the importance of organ donation and pray that you ‘register’ if you feel led to. Lonny’s ‘new lung’ gave him 12 solid years that he would not have otherwise had with his family. To sign up in Iowa: https://www.iowadonornetwork.org/register/index.htm
