VINTON – Sandra Louise “Sandy” Noren, 80, died Friday, May 11, 2018, at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton due to an extended illness.  A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 22, 2018, at First Christian Church in Vinton with Rev. Dave Neas officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, May 21, at the church. Inurnment will be in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens in Missouri Valley, Iowa, at a later date.

Sandy was born September 14, 1937, in Bloomington, Illinois, the daughter of Roy Cecil and Florence Louise Singer Barr. She attended school in Springfield, IL, until the 5th grade, and attended middle school and high school in Arlington Heights, IL, graduating in 1955. She spent two years at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington.

On October 27, 1957, Sandy was united in marriage with Ralph Glenn Noren in Arlington Heights, IL. He preceded her in death on December 14, 2001. On February 15, 2003, Sandy married Vincent M. “Mike” Pettinger at Plymouth Congregational Church in Des Moines.

Sandy worked as a reference librarian at the 1st National Bank of Chicago. She stopped working to raise her children.

Sandy had been a member of the Missouri Valley Presbyterian Church for over 30 years, where she was also an Elder. She later became a member and Elder of First Christian Church in Vinton and participated in the Wednesday morning Bible study for many years.

She was a member of the Thursday Card Club for 15 years and was also a member of the Mentor Literature Club and Hooks and Needles. She was a lover of dogs, horses, crocheting, reading, bird watching, and flower gardening.

Sandy is survived by her husband, Mike Pettinger, of Vinton; her children: Roy (Kelly) Noren of Omaha, NE; Patty (Jeff) Peterson, Robert (Molly) Noren and Frederick (Sue) Noren, all of Vinton; sister Patricia Cavanaugh of Pleasant Hill, TN; 11 grandchildren: Jill (Joe) Borghoff, Tyler and Madison Noren, Mandy Peterson, Cassandra (Andy) Oberhoffer, Dane Peterson, Matt (Nicole), Grant, Jessie, Katie and Lindsay Noren, Anna (Chris) Sojka, and Emily, Jake and Karly Reisch;  10 great-grandchildren: Jax and Vivian Borghoff , Talon and Brynn Oberhoffer, Liam Noren, Glennwood Kueny, Gracie and Harper Sojka, Jaiden Taylor and Kaleesi and Elias Flores, plus one more on the way.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Ralph, Noren; and one sister, Connie Edmonds, and brother-in-law, Jim Cavenaugh.
