VINTON:  Shirley L. Wicks, age 86, of Vinton, formerly of Cedar Rapids and Traer, died Thursday, September 6, 2018 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

Private family graveside services will be held at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, Iowa.

Shirley was born on June 21, 1932 in Endicott, NY, the daughter of Lawrence and Hildred (Howe) Edgerton.  On June 2, 1956, she was united in marriage to James E. Wicks in Minneapolis, MN, where she was staff organist for radio station KTIS and Jim was a staff announcer. The couple lived in Cedar Rapids and Traer prior to moving to Vinton.  Shirley taught piano and organ and was an accomplished keyboard musician who performed professionally across the eastern United States from the age of 14 until she retired.  She accompanied many well-known Christian vocalists over her career and hosted a daily radio program on KTIS, “Stylings in Ivory.”

In addition to her love of music, Shirley enjoyed needlework, sewing, and knitting.  She was also a fabulous cook.  She loved to spend time on the water on Whitefish Lake in Minnesota.

Shirley is survived by her husband Jim; three sons, James T. (Cheryl) Wicks of Salina, KS, Dr. Thomas J. (Christina) Wicks of Urbana, and Timothy A. Wicks of Excelsior, MN; and five grandchildren, Andrew, Ella, Lillie, Joshua and Jacob.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, and two brothers.

Her husband, sons, and grandchildren will miss her greatly.  In addition to her generosity, goodness, and grace, it was her prayers that sustained them and were responsible for much of what was good in their lives.

Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made in her memory to the Vinton Lutheran Home Music Fund, Vinton Lutheran Home, 1301 2nd Ave., Vinton, IA 52349
