DYSART: Walter Leroy Blackburn, 80, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, April 23, 2017 at Sunrise Hill Care & Rehab Center in Traer.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 A.M., Saturday, April 29, 2017 at Zion Lutheran Church in Dysart with Pastor James Radatz officiating. Interment will be held at the Dysart Cemetery with Graveside Military Rites conducted by the Myers-Gordy-Pippert American Legion Post #335 of Dysart and Iowa Military Funeral Honors. Visitation will be held at the church in Dysart from 3 to 7 PM, on Friday. Memorials can be left for Hospice Compassus
Walter was born September 2, 1936 in Cedar Rapids to Walter and Bessie (Jellisen) Blackburn. He served his nation in the US Navy.
On September 2, 1953, he was united in marriage to Karen Risdon in Cedar Rapids. The couple lived in Cedar Rapids, Shellsburg & Vinton before moving to Dysart in 1963. Karen preceded him in death in 1995.
Walter was employed for thirty years at John Deere Tractor Works in Waterloo and also farmed and trucked in the Dysart area.
He enjoyed Motorcycles, fishing, and attending car shows with his 51 Ford with Karen and Jon. He loved having coffee with friends and Ice Cream with Landry and Lilly. On occasion, he enjoyed a stiff whisky. Walter truly enjoyed his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his son, Brad (Kerry) Blackburn of Dysart; his daughters, Jananne (Steve) Koch of Toledo and Kara Butterfield of Dysart; his daughter-in-law, Cindy Blackburn of Vinton; his grandchildren, Mitchell Blackburn of Cedar Rapids, Shannon Blackburn of Toledo, Micheal Bouthilette of Toledo, Jonathan (Erica) Butterfield of Olive Hill, KY, Blaine Blackburn of Cedar Rapids, and Dallas, Landry and Lilly Blackburn all of Dysart; numerous great-grandchildren; and special nephew, Jerry (Rosalie) Blackburn of Temple, TX .
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his son, Charlie in 2014, his niece Carrie Risdon David; one brother, three sisters, and two half-sisters.
