By Ashley Hesson, VS-Union girls swim coach
The VS-U girls swim team competed in its opening meet of our 2018 season, with 13 girls on roster, Aug. 23.
The Girls performed very well tonight, it was a solid meed to start our season. There were some girls who had never swam competitively before last night, so it was good to get them some experience in how a meet flows as well as some experience in competition.
Veteran members of the team performed very well: Geordyn Webster, Clarissa Carolan and Amanda Cardenas all had solid times, especially for this early in the season (because of other activity conflicts, some had only had several days of practice before the meet).
Incoming freshmen were great contributors as well – every member of the team scored points either individually or on relays. It was a true team effort, as always.
Senior and Team Captain Arabella Shepard had a stellar night. In her first individual swim of the high school season, she swam the 100 Backstroke in a State Qualifying time of 59.89. She also strongly contributed to 2 top placing relays. Her leadership in and out of the pool has already been invaluable to the team.
With the outdoor pool draining soon, and the Braille School not yet filled and ready for use, we are without a pool to practice in – hopefully only for a few days. We’re back in competition on Thurs Aug. 30, at Linn-Mar.
The only home meet takes place on Sept. 18, the same day as the only VS home cross country meet.
