VSHS Cross Country Coach John Frazier, shares a laugh with Jeff Mangold, at the 2017 WaMaC meet in Vinton. Mangold will replace Frazier, who retired as head coach after 31 seasons.

The Vinton-Shellsburg School Board made official Monday evening the choice that retiring Cross Country Coach John Frazier said last fall that he hoped they would make: Hiring Jeff Mangold as head coach.

Mangold, who was the only freshman on the first Frazier-coached Vinton team in 1987, and has served as the assistant coach for the past few years, says he is very happy to become just the second cross-country coach in Vinton-Shellsburg history. Two years later, Vinton merged with Shellsburg. Frazier was the only CC coach in Vinton-Shellsburg history until now.

“I’m very excited for this opportunity and honored to carry on the great tradition that Coach Frazier has established for the last 31 years,” says Mangold. “Cross Country was the best thing that ever happened to me in high school, and I hope to provide a great experience for all the future cross country runners at VSHS. We have a lot of outstanding kids on the team already and I’m hoping that those numbers will grow even higher. Go VSCC!!”
Mangold, as the ELP teacher at Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School, is also the coach/advisor for Lego League, Future City and other academic competitions for VS middle schoolers.
