Playing just a few miles from Iowa’s famous Field of Dreams on Thursday evening, the Vinton-Shellsburg baseball team provided a movie-worthy offense that included 40 hits spread over two games as the Vikings swept Dyersville Beckman, 16-4 and 21-9. Every starting Viking batter either recorded a hit or scored after a walk in each win.

Then on Friday, the Vikings continued their consistent success at the plate, with each starter recording a hit, run or RBI in a 13-9 victory at Monticello.
The wins improve the unbeaten Vikes’ record to 7-0. The team has scored 11 or more runs in each of its games so far.
Seven Vikings have more than 10 hits so far; Jared Thompson leads the team with 14. Nathan Struve leads the Vikes with 17 RBI, including two home runs.
Coach Jim Struve offered the following summary of the three games.

Game #1 vs. Dyersville Beckman

Vikings beat Dyersville Beckman 16-4 in 6 innings.  Scott Betterton got his first Varsity Win allowing 5 hits and striking out 4 batters in 5 1/3 innings pitched.  Blake Bohnsack got the save in relief.  The Vikings had 16 hits with Nathan Struve and Jared Thompson leading the attack with 3 hits apiece and Tanner Davis, Scottie Wirth, David Bray, and Cole Overton each with 2 hits and Cole having 4 RBI’s.

Game #2 vs. Dyersville Beckman

The Vikings offense carried over into Game 2 as they Won 21-9 and collecting 24 hits.  Will Edwards was 6 for 6 with 3 stolen bases.  Jared Thompson had 4 hits and 3 RBI’s, Tanner Davis had 3 hits(Double and Triple) 3 RBI’s and Nathan Struve had 3 hits(Double and Homerun) and 7 RBI’s.  Conner Miracle pitched 4 innings to get the Win and Blake Bohnsack threw 3 innings of relief for his 2nd Save on the night.

Vikings beat Monticello 13-9 in a non conference contest Friday night.  The Vikings continued their offensive ways by collecting 17 hits and averaging 15 runs a game to begin the season.  Scottie Wirth had 3 hits(Triple), Conner Miracle, Tanner Davis and Jared Thompson each had 3 hits, 2 RBI’s as Davis and Thompson each hitting a double.  Wes Edwards pitched 5 solid innings to get the Win and David Bray pitched 2 innings of relief for the Save.  Scottie Wirth turned an unassisted double play in the 7th inning to stall the Panthers comeback attempt.

The Vikings will play a Conference doubleheader versus South Tama at Viking Field on Monday June 5th at 5:00pm.
