The five members of the Vinton-Shellsburg girls track team who competed at the State Meet last week made some strong showings in less than ideal weather conditions at Drake Stadium.
“After a rainy weekend, we had some great things happen,” says Coach Heather Kalous. “We started off Thursday with Sarah Schminke in the 200M dash. She tied the school record of 26.43 that had been set by Payton Leonard in 2014.”
On Friday, the team of Hannah Kalous, Hanna Timmerman, Sarah Schminke and Gracie Horst ran the distance medley.
“It was not their best time of the year, but the girls ran hard,” says the coach.
On Friday, the four members who run in the 4×200 and the 4×100 relays (LaDorshae Mull, Sarah Schminke, Hannah Kalous, Hanna Timmerman) did well, placing in each of those races better than had going in to State.
“Grace Horst then capped off our weekend, running the open 800 and 1500 and had strong showings in both,” says Coach Kalous. “She was 3 seconds off her school record in the 1500M. As a whole we had small numbers of athletes who were out for girls track but the ones that were worked hard in each event they ran.”
Of the five Vikettes at State, only Mull is a senior. The other four hope to return to State next year to improve their times.
