The Vikings followed this miserably cold game, a 2-1 loss to Western Dubuque, with their first win in nearly four years, defeating Mount Vernon, 4-1.

Hard work.

Determination.

The belief that you can improve, and win.

The Vinton-Shellsburg boys soccer team has been living by those principals for the past several years, despite losing every game.

The nearly four-year long losing streak ended on Tuesday, with a 4-1 win at Mount Vernon. Freshmen led the way, with CJ Rickels scoring two goals, Mike Betterton scoring one and David Lapan-Islas earning an assist. Senior Noah Hedinger scored the other goal and junior goalie Alex Pladsen recorded six saves to aid the Viking defense.

The Vikings return to their home field on Thursday, where they will host Marion. Their win followed a close loss to Western Dubuque, which held on for a 2-1 win during Friday’s very cold and windy home opener.
