The Vinton-Shellsburg track teams did very well at the Viking and Vikette invitational meets Tuesday in Vinton, as the Vikings took first and the Vikettes finished a close second.

Winning for the Vikings were:

Blake Bohnsack, 400M, 52.34; long jump, 20 feet, 2 inches;

Cole Overton, shot put, 54 feet, 4 inches;

4 x 200 relay (Will Dudley, Jose Wilson, Justin Bartz, Keegan Thompson), 1:35.96;

4 x 400 relay (Blake Bohnsack, Justin Bartz, Cole Tharp, Matt Andreesen), 3:35.43;

4 x 800 relay (Nolan Haisman, Matt Andreesen, Tyler Hekel, Cole Tharp), 8:39.57;

Benton finished second in the meet. Other participating schools were: Marion, Alburnett, Denver, HL-V, Iowa Valley, Clear Creek-Amana.

Vikettes finish second to Benton; first ‘Mo’ medals presented

In the girls invitational, VS finished with 116 team points, 6 points behind Benton Community.

Vikette winners included:

Grace Horst, 800M, 2:31.10; 1500M, 5:27.90;

4 x 100 throwers relay (Aza Swayzer, Merle Hedinger, Lauren Upmeyer, Taylor Shipley), 1:52.08;

1600 distance medley (Hannah Kalous, Maddie Erhardt, Sarah Schminke, Grace Horst), 4:31.56.

Other competing schools in the girls’ meet were: West Marshall, English Valleys, Marion, HL-V, Alburnett and Iowa Valley.

Ken Huelman presented the first two special “Mo” medals, in memory of his daughter Monica Huelman Zaruba, to the winners of the girls discus and shot put events. Those recipients are discus winner Madison Trimpe of English Valleys and shot put winner Ranae Schaper of West Marshall.
