The Vinton-Shellsburg-Union swimming team, despite competing against larger teams and being short a few swimmers, finished third in a five-way meet in Waterloo on Saturday.

The five teams competing included Decorah, Waterloo, Keokuk, Ottumwa, and VSU.
“We placed 3rd in team competition,” says coach Ashley Hesso. “We won two events, finished 2nd in four, and 3rd in two more. We were short three girls, so our numbers hurt us a bit today – particularly when swimming against teams of 40+ athletes.¬†Despite being short-handed, we posted great times – several girls dropping time and most others right on their personal bests.”
Senior Arabella Shepard qualified for State in her 3rd individual event  Рthe 200 IM, also improving her previously held school record by more than a second.
Sophomore Maren Redlinger cut 3 seconds off her 100 freestyle time.
“Her times are coming down nicely, and I expect strong times from her as our season continues,” says Hesson,
The girls will be back in the pool Monday for their 3rd meet in 5 days – an invitational at Williamsburg.
