A great night for VSU Swimming!
–VSU was 2nd out of 5 teams competing (Vinton-Shellsburg-Union, Grinnell, Oskaloosa, Williamsburg, and East Des Moines), losing only to Des Moines East
–VSU won 8 of the 11 swimming events, came in 2nd in 2 of the other events
–Personal best times were dropped in 13 events
–Arabella Shepard improved the school record (which she previously held) in the 200 Freestyle by 2 seconds, and swam a monster 50 freestyle split in the sprint relay to come from behind for the win.
Clarissa Carolan swimming butterfly in the 200 IM
–Clarissa Carolyn cut 2 seconds off her 100 backstroke time to win the event. Lexi Goodell pulled away from tight competition in the 100 breaststroke too. And Geordyn Webster held off a hard charge by 3 other swimmers in the 500 free to secure 2nd place points. Carlie Spore has shown her dedication by scoring points in the challenging butterfly events and helping lead the less experienced swimmers in relays.
“We have some things to work on – we got touched out in a few races so we’ll work on finishing hard into the wall, and we can always benefit from more power and speed in our strokes so we’ll work on strength and turnover rates.
Overall, I’m very proud of this group for the leadership I’m seeing in the veterans, for the improvement I’m seeing in the newcomers, and for the physical and mental toughness I’m seeing out of everyone. They’re coming together as a team, pushing each other, and supporting each other. These young women are building each other up in and out of the pool – and that’s what sport is all about.” said Coach Ashley Hesson.
