Annual Trunk or Treat Event to be held at Blessed Hope Church

The annual Trunk or Treat event provided by the area MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) group, will be held at the Blessed Hope Church, located behind Theisen's, on Wednesday, October 31st, from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Children are invited to start their evening at the church parking lot. The group, "Be The Change" will also offer Trunk or Treat options for the kiddo's on the 1st Avenue block (by Ron-Da-Voo/ Farm Bureau office ) from 5:00-7:00 p.

The Blackberry Bushes will perform at Farmers Mercantile Hall in Garrison, on Sunday, October 14th from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm. Jes Raymond & Jakob Breitbach form the core of the Blackberry Bushes, featuring some great flatpicking, clawhammer banjo and virtuoso fiddle, along with some beautiful original music.

Once upon a time, Iowa farmers raised non-confinement hogs, had a herd of beef cows and probably fed out their own calves, maybe even milked some cows for the regular milk check, possibly had a few sheep and some of their wives raised chickens. Now no fences—no cows; not a hog in sight in the leading hog-producing state; and you’re more likely to see chickens in town than on a farm.

AMERICAN LEGION FRYING UP FOOD FOR SCHOLARS

The Vinton American Legion will be frying burgers and brats in the Fareway parking lot on Saturday, August 4, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is a free will donation. The proceeds will be used to award scholarships to area students.

Annual Fundraising Event Benefits Garrison Emergency Services ‘Garrison’s Haunted’ is back for more nights of frights and ready to rain more terror on those who dare to cross its threshold than ever before. The annual event is a production by the Garrison Firefighters, First Responders, Auxiliary members and a squad of volunteers.

What was life “really” like below stairs at a place like Highclere Castle? Could the chauffeur really marry the daughter of an Earl? Would a maid help move a body to protect her mistress’ reputation? What about all that free time? Historian Kathy Wilson reveals the answers to these and many other questions in this program focusing on the realities of domestic service on one of the country’s most popular PBS television series, “Downton Abbey.

The Vinton Shellsburg boys and girls golf teams are having a 4 person best shot golf tournament this Saturday at the Vinton Country Club. The cost is $30 a person and includes a meal provided by the country club.  The event begins at 9:00 a.m. Carts will be available to rent at $15 per couple/pair, request them early! There will be numerous raffle items and silent auction items and prizes.

Fields of Faith event to be held at Union Football Field

The Annual Fields of Faith event will take place at hundreds of schools nationwide, including locally at Union Football Field, on Wednesday, Oct. 3. “We are excited to say we will have three impact stories from two UNI gals who  are swimmers and  a call to action with a former arena football player, Mick Rodemeyer at he end,” says organizer and Union coach Joe Hadachek.

Breast cancer survivors to meet Oct. 8

The Benton County Breast Cancer Survivors will meet October 8 in the dining room of Windsor Manor at 5:45. Dinner is seven dollars; no reservations required. October is Breast Cancer month; we will have a guest speaker(s), Diane Bramow sharing about the Pink Heals program that she and her husband started here in Vinton.

Woosley Tours to arrive in Vinton September 27

"Last year the first Woosley Tours arrived in Vinton for a noon time meal event and it was, indeed, very successful.
