Kate Marie Craft, 16, La Porte City, passed away on Sunday, December 10, 2023, two and a half years after being diagnosed with glioblastoma.

She was born January 17, 2007, in Waterloo, daughter of Matt and Sarah Craft.

Kate was a junior at Union High School where she was an honor roll student. She was a standout athlete in basketball, swimming, soccer, and track and field. Kate loved basketball, cats, drawing, playing trumpet, the Houston Rockets and the Iowa State Cyclones. Kate was a fierce competitor, a sports enthusiast, and dreamed of becoming a sports journalist. Her favorite places were basketball courts, Clear Lake, Florida and her family farms. Unfazed by the challenges given to her during the last two and a half years of her life, she traveled to see Hamilton on Broadway, sit front row at a live show of Saturday Night Live, visit the Basketball Hall of Fame, see the Golden Gate Bridge and the Pacific Ocean, watch the Iowa State women's basketball team win a Big 12 Championship in Kansas City, learn the Dream Shake from Hakeem Olajuwon and sit courtside at WNBA and NBA games.

Kate is survived by her parents; sisters, Claudia, Natalie, and Madeline Craft; paternal grandparents, Mike and LeAnn Craft, all of La Porte City; maternal grandparents, Gary and Kathy Smith of Cedar Rapids; and great-grandmothers, Virginia Smith of Lawton, and Irene Holthaus of Ames.

She was preceded in death by her great-grandparents, Kimball (Doyle) Smith, Edward Holthaus, Louis (William) and Arlene Bogan, and Raymond and Patricia Craft.

A private family service will take place at American Lutheran Church on Saturday, December 16th, 2023, followed by a public funeral service at 1:00 PM at Union High School, 200 Adams Street, La Porte City. Private family burial to take place in West View Cemetery, La Porte City following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
