Surrounded by loving family, Carole Selk Phelps, 85, passed away peacefully Monday, April 22, 2024, at Virginia Gay Hospital, Vinton.  Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 26, 2024, at First Christian Church, Vinton, with Pastor Richard Jumper officiating.  Friends may visit with the family from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, April 25, at Van Steenhuyse-Teahen Funeral Home, Vinton, and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday. Burial will be in Mt. Auburn Cemetery.

Carole was born November 27, 1938 in Sutherland, IA, the daughter of Elmer and Hesper (Libolt) Selk.  She was a graduate of Linn Grove High School and then attended Drake University in Des Moines where she earned her RN degree.  On April 3, 1960, Carole was united in marriage to Mahlon Phelps at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.  Throughout her nursing career, Carole was employed in Independence, Clarinda, Humboldt, Cedar Rapids and Vinton.  While employed at the Virginia Gay Annex in Vinton, she also taught Nursing Assistant students.

Carole enjoyed bowling, watching game shows (especially Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune), reading, playing cards, gardening, playing Bingo, and spending time with her family.

Left to cherish Carole's memory are her children: James, Thomas (Duska), Tamera, Michelle (Jeff), and Melissa (Paul); her grandchildren: Kellie (Howard), Donnie, Noelle (John), Morgan (Danan), Ryan (Paije), Mercedes (Thor), Clayton, Mahlonna (Dalton), Tanner, and Tommy; great-grandchildren: Shyrah, Vivian, Zander, Luke, and Kaylin; sister, Jody (Paul); sister-in-law, Jeannie (Jerry); and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. 

Carole was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 49 years, Mahlon; grandson, Luke; daughter-in-law, Jo; brother, Butch; and sister, Jo.

A memorial fund has been established.
