Benton County Public Health is excited to begin teaching SafeSitter babysitting courses here in Benton County beginning Saturday, December 2nd, 2023 at the Vinton Public Library.

The SafeSitter babysitting course curriculum has been around for decades, and allows students opportunities to interact with their peers as they learn everything from personal & internet safety, to first aid & choking rescue skills, to business skills and behavior management.

Included in the 5 ½ hour course (click the blue words for more information) are diapering lessons, education on growth & development stages, scenario-based problem solving activities, and fun games to encourage critical thinking. The course not only prepares students grades 6-8 in the basic babysitting tasks of feeding, changing, playing, etc., but how to prepare for inevitable emergencies such as choking, series injury, fire and dangerous encounters.
The goal of offering this course is to not only work to supplement the childcare shortage we are currently experiencing across the country, but to encourage and empower young adults to grow their business & leadership skills, and foster positive attitudes about working with children.
Due to the involved curriculum, there is a maximum of 8 students per class; if registration exceeds class capacity for 12/2, we plan to add additional dates & times throughout Winter Break!
The cost of the course is $30, and will include a Safe Sitter® kit with Student Handbook, completion card, LED Flashlight, bandage dispenser, and notepad with emergency numbers; at the end of the course will be a short graduation ceremony, where students will be presented with a certificate and opportunities to show off their skills!
Parents can learn more about the curriculum & register by calling Benton County Public Health at (319) 214 - 2601, or emailing gpetrzelka@bentoncountyia.gov.
Hope to see you there!
