Matt Boggess, Director of the Vinton Parks and Recreation released a statement announcing new rules for participation and consequences in the use of the facilities. Facilities where the new rules apply include the department's three locations the skating rink, pool and recreation center. The new policies will help staff to better manage all of the patrons of the facilities.

The new rules went into effect as of October 1, 2023.

Age Guidelines

Children under the age of 8 years old will not be allowed to be at any of the facilities without a parent or guardian present. The guardian must be at least 15 years of age and no younger.

Three Strike Policy

Strikes will be given:

-If you are in one of the facilities and engage in a behavior or activity that is of an unsafe nature to another patron

-If you are disrespectful to another patron or employee

For example:

With a first strike at the skate center, you will be asked to remove your skates and asked to sit for the remainder of the night. At the rec center or pool, you may be asked to leave the facility. You will also be given information to take home to your parent or guardian for them to sign acknowledging the strike.

After the second strike, you will not be allowed to enter the facility without a parent or guardian. These guardians must be at least 18 years old and they will only need to stay with you for that visit.

Upon a third strike, you will be suspended from the properties for a minimum of 3 months. After the three months is over, you will start with a clean slate and zero strikes.

Boggess explained, "You could go from no strikes to three strikes real quick, depending on the nature or severity of your actions." He clarified that they are not making these changes to eliminate anyone from the facilities. "We want everyone to come and enjoy the activities and all the things that we have to offer. we just want to be able to offer the safest environment that we possibly can," Boggess said.

Boggess reiterated his appreciation for the community and hopes to see more folks at the skating rink and rec center this winter and everyone at the pool next summer.
