Dozens of local job seekers, from high school students looking for part-time work to new residents looking for their first job in Vinton, gathered at the Skate Center, where several local businesses had set up tables for the annual VU Job Fair.
Last year, Kim Fischels of Custom Millwork & Finishing met an applicant who became a part-time driver.
"He is doing routes for us today," she said on Tuesday, as employers discussed their businesses and needs with job seekers.
Most of the companies represented are actively hiring at this time. Many accepted applications during the Job Fair.
VU Director Melissa Schwan said the Job Fair has grown from its initial event last year.
"Last year was our first year for the event and we didn’t really know what to expect," she says. "Participation was slim so we took the feedback and make some tweaks for this year. The number of job seekers that attended last night was substantially more than last year. I think the switch to a weeknight, rather than a Saturday morning was a smart move. We are still trying to identify the sweet spot for timing but last night shows we took a step in the right direction."
The Job Fair was good for prospective employees, as well as the participating employers, says Schwan.
"I understand that advertising for open positions is expensive for businesses so Vinton Unlimited was excited to be able to offer some assistance to our businesses. All Vinton Unlimited members were able to participate for no charge. On behalf of Vinton Unlimited’s Community Affairs committee, I would like to thank all of the businesses that participated as well as the job seekers that attended. We are open to any feedback you all may have."
Participating businesses included:
