By Samantha Petersen, Benton County Farm Bureau Vice President-
I was able to travel to Washington DC to join several representatives of Iowa Farm Bureau for the 2022 National Policy Trip. We had an excellent trip which included the opportunity to meet with Congresswoman Ashley Hinson, Senator Chuck Grassley, and Senator Joni Ernst to express Iowa Farm Bureau's positions on key issues that could affect us here at home and on our farms. All three of these leaders support our positions regarding the proposed SEC Climate Rule, Cattle Market Reform, Ag Input Prices, the importance of Biofuels, and our position on the new Farm Bill.
The proposed SEC Climate Rule is an example of overreach by the Securities and Exchange Commission. To impose additional regulations and reporting would be costly and would put unnecessary stress on our already highly regulated operations. We met with a representative of the SEC later in the week, and I hope that she heard our concerns as well.
We also discussed the importance of cattle market reform efforts. We believe that cattle producers should be afforded the opportunity to pursue a fair and transparent livestock marketing system.
Ag input prices are a real concern. In some instances, the cost of fertilizer is up as much as 300%. This is a huge concern across the country, and directly affects the ability for farmers to produce food for the growing population. We asked for support in avoiding any actions that could create additional tariffs on fertilizer supplies.
We also had lengthy discussion about the importance of biofuels to the longevity and success of agriculture as we know it. We met with a representative of the Renewable Fuels Association which was informative and encouraging.
The farm bill was a priority for discussion as well. It is important for America's farmers to be supported by strong farm programs as we face weather disasters, high input costs, and inflationary pressures. Managing risk is critical to keeping food on our tables. All three leaders support prioritizing risk management tools that include both federal crop insurance and commodity programs.
Representatives from the USDA, EPA, and American Farm Bureau were also on the agenda. The trip was effective and the concerns that we expressed were heard. I am grateful for representatives that hear our concerns and do all they can to support the American Farmer.
