Each year East-Central Iowa Rural Electric Cooperative sends two selected juniors from 16 area high schools to represent ECI REC at the Iowa Rural Electric Youth Tour of Washington, D.C., in June. This year two Independence High School juniors were chosen:
Dustin Toale, son of Terry and Susie Toale of the Independence area, is active in his church, Lions/Leo Club for youth, and Boy Scouts of America where he’s been awarded the highest rank, Eagle Scout. At Independence High School, Dustin enjoys tennis, swim team, music, Iowa Bar Association, and student council, where he serves as the Junior Class Representative. In the summertime his activities include public pool lifeguard, public library assistant, and helps out at Bank Iowa as maintenance assistant. Logan Halverson is active in his church and Boy Scouts of America where he’s been awarded the highest rank, Eagle Scout. He is involved in speech, concert band, concert choir, and tennis at Independence High School. Logan is currently working towards his Private Pilots License and is the son of Tom Halverson and Julie Falcon from the Independence area.
East-Central Iowa REC will be sponsoring these two students on an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. June 11-16 2011. Approximately 1,000 youth participants from across the nation will visit historical sites, explore the Smithsonian Museums, meet Iowa’s congressional leaders, spend a day on Capitol Hill, cruise down the Potomac River, learn about electric cooperatives and meet students from many other states on Rural Electric Youth Day.
East-Central Iowa REC provides power to people in Benton, Black Hawk, Bremer, Buchanan, Clayton, Delaware, Fayette, Linn, Tama, Johnson and Iowa counties. Iowa’s electric cooperatives provide power in each of the state’s 99 counties to approximately 650,000 people.
